What does SPAB mean?
SPAB stands for School Pupil Activity Bus. In California, any commercial bus transporting students for school-sponsored events (field trips, sports, etc.) must be SPAB-certified. This means both the vehicle and the driver meet strict California Highway Patrol (CHP) safety and training standards.

Do schools have to provide transportation in San Francisco?
San Francisco schools are not required by law to provide transportation services to general education students. However, there are exceptions for special needs students. The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) also collaborates with the city’s public transit system, Muni, to offer free rides to students.

How to request transportation services in SFUSD?
You can request transportation services in SFUSD on the SFUSD website. They offer online and phone support from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Pacific time on weekdays and are also available via mail. For special needs students, transportation requests may require additional documents like a written letter from a doctor or school counselor. It is important to submit your requests as early as possible so it can be processed on time.
